I have a 3/4" thick plate of steel and I want to cut a few holes in it - I don't have anything to do this with, but I can borrow a mag drill for a short time. There's a chuck attachment for the drill, and I am wondering if a hole saw would work to cut a 1-1/8" diameter hole if I was to proceed slowly using cutting oil and clear the chips often.
Mar 06, 2016 · I have two pieces of 1" thick, 6" round 1045 steel in which one will have 3.75" hole in the center, the other a 4.25" hole. My basement workshop isn't that well equipped, so here's what I'm debating. 1) Run it in the lathe. Drill the center out with the biggest drill I own (.75) and then hog out with a boring bar to size. Drill America 4-3/8 in. Carbide Tipped Hole Cutter with 1 The spring, UN-compressed, is approx. 1 1/2" and is very stiff with a 1" depth of cut, which I can't imagine I would ever need, but it does have 2 pry holes if needed. This bit easily drilled 6 holes in the 16 gauge plate steel, if your are drilling a lot of holes and thicker material an electric drill would work better.
Lubricate drill with oil when cutting steel 1/8" or thicker. Use center punch on all holes to prevent drill from wandering. Your drill probably runs 300 rpm, not 3000, and if you're having problems, try some cutting oil on the bit while drilling, and drilling a pilot hole for the 1/2" bit to follow will also help. For a 1/2"bit, about 1/8" pilot hole
Jul 23, 2014 · I think it could be done with a hole saw and a big old slow drill motor. About 20 years ago I helped drill four 6" holes in 3/4" thick stainless on a vertical surface on a paper machine. We used a peavy handle to keep the drill from getting away. It How to Drill High-Carbon Steel eHowHigh-carbon steel, or hardened steel as it is sometimes called, uses carbon as the main alloying constituent. High-carbon steel can become harder and stronger through heat treatments and quenching after tempering. This also makes it less ductile, reduces the weld ability and increases the difficulty to drill through it.
I need to drill several holes, 1", 1-3/8" in 1/2" steel plate. I have a 16 speed drill press. I drill 1-1/8 inch holes in steel plate with no problem. They are clean as a pin. In the second pic I did them in place, these were 3/4 thru 2 plates half inch thick, using water and taking break, about 5 minutes a hole.
